Baptismal Policy

St. Paul’s Church, Walkden is delighted that you have enquired about having your child baptised at our church.

St. Paul’s welcomes the baptism of infants and children, as well as adults, and is committed to welcoming you with the Godparents in exploring how you can grow in the Christian faith, and remain faithful to the baptismal promises that you will make.

Before the baptism can take place, we ask that you attend a minimum of three Sunday morning services, along with the Godparents where possible, so that you can familiarise yourself with the church and give the congregation the opportunity to welcome you.

In order for your child to be baptised you will need to meet one of the following criteria :

a) be resident in the parish
b) be a member of the church
c) have a connection with the church
If you do not meet one of the criteria, it will be at the discretion of the incumbent to allow your child to be baptised at St. Pauls.

It is a requirement that at least ONE of the parents is baptised and that ALL the
Godparents are baptised.

Once you have attended church, the parents, (and ideally the Godparents) will be required to attend a Baptism Preparation meeting with a member of the church before the baptism date is agreed, and before the Vicar doing the baptism visits you at home to confirm the details.

Baptism’s usually take place on the 2nd & 4th Sunday of the month at 12.30pm. No more than two babies are baptised at any one time, or babies / children from two families.

There is no charge for a baptism but a contribution to cover the costs incurred by the church, for a baptism would be appreciated. We would also be grateful if you could encourage your friends and family in attendance to make a nominal donation on the plate at the back of the church as they leave as this will help towards the overall running costs of the church.
